Sep 9 Late Fennell strike steals the points
A dramatic finish tonight to Arklow Town B's opening home fixture in the Andy McEvoy Premier League with a coolly placed finish from John Fennell edging Town past previously unbeaten St. Anthony's. Both sides opened well with the visiting keeper making a superb save to deny Town on the quarter hour. Town dominated for long spells in the opening half but were unable to break through a determined Anthony's defence. The away team asked a number of questions themselves as, truth be told, the game began to get bogged down in the middle, with neither side capable of opening the opposition backline. Scoreless at half time, the Kilcoole side stole a lead in the opening minutes of the second half, a quick counter attack punishing an exposed Town defence. Town, breaking upfield on the right flank, lost possession in their own half and were punished with maximum effect, with St. Anthony's countering quickly, two touches finding their forward on the edge of the six yard box and he fired home with a good first touch. Midway through the half Town levelled with the impressive Anthony Kenny netting from the penalty spot after being felled in the area. Kenny's industry ensured Town upped the ante late in the game, in pursuit of a winner and the three points. That endeavour was rewarded in the dying moments of the game after fine work from Stephen O'Neill out on the left flank, the Arklow youngster passed cleverly inside to the lively John Fennell and Fennell chose finesse instead of power when picking out the far corner, beyond the reach of the keeper to secure a dramatic win for Town.
