Aug 30 2009 Inaugural Children First International Tournament a wonderful success
Two days of high quality international schoolboy football came to an end with Sheffield United deservedly lifting the inaugural Children First International Cup, overcoming the challenge of Polish club Klub Sportowy Piaseczno in the final, at Bridgewater Centre Park. The hosts Arklow Town ended the tournament on a high, defeating a quality Czech team from Hanacka Slavia Kromeriz 1-0 in the Plate Final, a spectacular finish from Craig Kinsella ensuring the home side finished on a high. North Dublin Schoolboys/girl League sneaked past French club Olympic Club de Chateadun in the Bowl Final. However, the over riding memory was of a fantastic weekend of football played in an excellent spirit with six teams from five different nations all coming together to enjoy playing football.
May 23 2009 No doubting Thomas in penalty drama
High drama in Kilcoole as Arklow Town U9B's and Wolfe Tone A met in the WDSL U9 Division 1 Shield Final. A tight encounter between the sides ended scoreless and with extra time failing to separate the sides penalties were required to decide the Final. Town keeper David Thomas saved twice with Rory Heffernan netting to bring the drama into sudden death penalties. Thomas again saved for Town and when striker Harold Stephenson then netted his spot kick the celebrations began, Arklow Town U9B crowned Shield winners 2009.
May 9 2009 Dramatic comeback sees Town lift Joseph Blunt Cup
High drama at Rathnew's Shamrock Park as Arklow Town U10A and Greystones United U10A faced each other in a magnificent WDSL U10 Joseph Blunt Cup Final. Twice behind, the Town side were forced to dig deep to overcome a valiant 'Stones side. Goals from Liam Scales (2), Morgan Harris and Conor Dodd secured a 4-2 victory, adding a second leg to Town's potential treble this season having already lifted the WDSL U10 Premier League title earlier this season.
Thanks to Ricky Scales for submitting the following gallery of images from the WDSL U10 Joseph Blunt Cup Final.
May 9 2009 Town denied League and Cup double
Disappointment for Town's U9A side, beaten 2-1 by a good Enniskerry A side in a close Arklow Town FC Juniors Cup Final, played at Rathnew's Shamrock Park. The Arklow side pipped Enniskerry to the League title earlier this season and both sides provided an entertaining encounter, arguably a game of two halves, with Clive Keenan opening the scoring, for Town, with a wonderful right foot volley into the top right corner beyond the Enniskerry keeper. Two second half goals though from the Bog Meadow side ensured the cup, sponsored by Arklow Town FC, headed due north and not "home".
Apr 25 2009 National Cup heartbreak for Town
Arklow Town's dream of SFAI U16 Barry Cup success was ended at Corinthian Park, in Cork, when facing College Corinthians in a dramatic quarter final clash. Town, as ever, do things the hard way and with the draw for this year's National Cup seeing Town drawn to play away in every round of the competition, it was always going to be a tough ask. Unfortunately, the dream of lifting a National title ended at this quarter final stage with a cruel exit, in extra time, going down to a last gasp winner for the home side after the eighty minutes had finished 1-1, with Dara Verney netting for Town.
Mar 15 2009 Town's 11s enjoy the bright lights
A lovely piece of Club history proved thoroughly enjoyable for all present as Town's U11A and U11B sides met each other in this season's WDSL U11 Premier Cup quarter final clash at Bridgewater Centre Park. The occasion, the very first time two schoolboy / schoolgirl sides from the Club faced each other under the lights and an excellent attendance were royally treated to an excellent display from both sides with the U11A side winning the game 3-0 and advancing to the semi finals.
Dec 20 2008 Town put on champion display to lift title
After the minor disappointment seven days previously, at the Leisure Centre, when the same two sides met, Arklow Town U9A's spurning an opportunity to lift the title at home, being held to a 2-2 draw, the Town side duly lifted the WDSL Premier Division title with an emphatic 5-1 win away at Ardmore Rovers, at Ballywaltrim in Bray. Town went into the fixture knowing a solitary point would see the Black and Whites pipping rivals Enniskerry to secure the title and saving one of their best performances of the season thus far, when it mattered most, Town put on a five star effort to ease to the league title, with goals on the day coming from Eoin Cullen, Eoghan O'Neill (2) and Clive Keenan (2), much to the joy of players, parents and supporters alike.
Dec 21 2008 Town stroll to Title success
The formbook suggested a home win for Arklow Town U10B’s as they welcomed lowly St. Fergal’s to the Leisure Centre, and with Thomas Rowan striking for the home side inside the first minute the result was never to be in doubt as the Arklow side safely secured the win needed to become WDSL U10 Division 1 champions.
