Season 2008-09 |
With an amazing haul of twenty five titles in League, Shield and Cup football season 2008-09 will be remembered as Arklow Town's finest ever season in WDSL competition. An incredible season, with ten League titles, nine Shield titles and six Cup victories, all putting silverware in Town hands. Success also in SFAI competition with the U16A side going closest to national glory, agonisingly going out to a last gasp extra time winner away at Cork Corinthians in the Barry Cup quarter final. The team, however, did reach the All Ireland Final, in the SFAI Paul O'Neill Cup, playing under the WDSL banner, again losing to Leeside opposition in the Final, which was played under glorious sunshine at our own Bridgewater Centre Park.
Vincent Butler, before retiring from his position with the national sides, brought his Irish team to Arklow on two occasions over the course of the season and a goal from Jonathan Kelty in the second fixture secured a win for the club over country. Pleasing also that evening to see Town keeper Nathan Condell earning national recognition, a second half introduction with the boys in green.
The association with Sheffield United was confirmed, the contracts signed sealed and delivered at the End of Season Presentation Awards. Irish international midfielder Shane Murray, recognised earlier this season with a nomination for the FAI U16 International Player of the Year, signed professional terms with Sheffield and everyone at Arklow Town Football Club sincerely wishes Shane all the very best as he joins Sheffield United's Academy.
The U17 side completed a League and Cup double in WDL competition, with Town's (senior) B team lifting the WDL Division 2 title after a play off success over St. Patrick's. A disappointing season for Town's A team, who struggled in the Premier Division. However, it was the LSL team who achieved most all season long, even if they were to be cruelly denied a deserved promotion and league title at the end of the year. A last day defeat at Firhouse Clover not only denied Town the LSL Division 1 title, promotion was cruelly snatched from them also. More pleasing was the fantastic achievement, a first for the Club, in reaching the FAI Cup 3rd Round, having defeated UCD's LSL side though handicapped with the early departure of keeper Craig Britton in Town's 2-1 win over the Students. Lady Luck denied Town a glamour home draw in the following round and who would have thought Matt Britton's side would come out of the hat as opponents of UCD's League of Ireland side, (then) flying high on top of Division 1! A gallant effort from Town ended in defeat, eventually losing 3-1 after earlier daring to dream, courtesy of a goal from Daragh Murray on the quarter hour mark.
